How Do You Calculate Warehouse Racking Capacity?

Apr. 20, 2023

Warehouse racking capacity is a crucial factor in determining the efficiency of a warehouse. The amount of goods that can be stored in a warehouse depends on the design and layout of the racking system used. It is essential to ensure that the racking system used can support the weight of the goods being stored and the weight of the racking itself.

Here are the steps to calculate warehouse racking capacity:

Determine the maximum weight of the goods that will be stored on each shelf.

The first step in calculating the racking capacity of a warehouse is to determine the maximum weight of the goods that will be stored on each shelf. This weight is called the Uniformly Distributed Load (UDL) and is typically measured in kilograms or pounds.

To calculate the UDL, you need to consider the weight of the goods and the type of shelving system used. Different shelving systems have different weight capacities, so it is important to consult the manufacturer's specifications to determine the maximum UDL for each type of shelf.

Determine the maximum height of the racking system.

The second step in calculating the racking capacity of a warehouse is to determine the maximum height of the racking system. The height of the racking system is determined by the height of the building and the clearance required between the top of the racking system and the ceiling. The maximum height of the racking system will determine the number of levels that can be installed in the warehouse.

It is important to note that the height of the racking system should not exceed the height of the building or the maximum height allowed by local building codes.

Calculate the maximum number of levels that can be installed.

Once the maximum height of the racking system has been determined, the next step is to calculate the maximum number of levels that can be installed. This is calculated by dividing the height of the racking system by the height of each level.

For example, if the height of the racking system is 10 meters and the height of each level is 2 meters, then the maximum number of levels that can be installed is 5.

Calculate the total shelf area.

The next step in calculating the racking capacity of a warehouse is to calculate the total shelf area. This is calculated by multiplying the width of each shelf by the depth of each shelf and then multiplying this figure by the number of levels in the racking system.

For example, if the width of each shelf is 1 meter, the depth of each shelf is 1 meter, and there are 5 levels in the racking system, then the total shelf area is:

1m x 1m x 5 = 5 square meters

Calculate the total weight capacity.

The final step in calculating the racking capacity of a warehouse is to calculate the total weight capacity. This is calculated by multiplying the UDL by the total shelf area and then multiplying this figure by the number of levels in the racking system.

For example, if the UDL is 500 kilograms per shelf, the total shelf area is 5 square meters, and there are 5 levels in the racking system, then the total weight capacity is:

500kg x 5m² x 5 = 12,500 kilograms

It is important to note that the total weight capacity of a racking system should never be exceeded. Overloading a racking system can cause it to collapse, resulting in damage to the goods stored on the shelves and the risk of injury to employees.
